it's commenting time!

I'm very happy to announce the First Ever Tiger Food Ephemera shop giveaway!

But before we start, I hope you'll indulge me as I weave a little background into my narrative. I've been dabbling in this world of making things for a time. I have a good decade of commercial print experience under my belt, a degree in fine art, and a studio practice that includes everything from weird art installations and quasi-performative work to print jobs-for-hire. I've tried, throughout the years, to reconcile my life as "worker bee" i.e. printer, with "maker of craft items" with "fine artist." Only recently, as in the last year or so, have I felt all of these roles comfortably coming together.

That is to say, wow, it's been a long journey here.

I hope this makes sense, because the point I'm trying to make is: I want to celebrate the end of a busy, productive year, and the support I've received from all of you, seen and unseen. I wouldn't have bothered to try to eek out my little place in this world if I hadn't thought there were people watching and listening.

So here is where you come in. I'd love to hear from you! And by you, I mean those of you who do often comment, but especially those of you who visit quietly. I'm interested in you, reader. I'd like to know who you are. So don't be shy. You are welcome to come out of the woodwork just this once at least, to say hi.

Here are the rules. If you've skipped my boring monologue so far, fine. Just read this:

To enter ~ Simply leave a comment answering one or both of these questions.

1. How did you stumble upon this blog, and are you a regular visitor? (OK, so that's two questions in one. Just humor me! And feel free to be perfectly frank. First time visitor and plan to return? Or are you just here for the giveaway with no plans to come back because I've bored you to tears? That's totally reasonable. Do you stop by periodically? Daily? Elaborate as much as you'd like.)

~and/or~

2. What are your New Years resolutions, if any? Tell me about your plans for 2011 - whatever they may be - I'll admit I'm one of those suckers who likes to make resolutions. There's something rejuvenating about a symbolic clean slate and the possibility of a fresh new direction. Do you stick to your plans or do they fizzle out? I truly, honestly love hearing about this stuff!

Here's the rub: if you answer both questions you'll be entered twice. Huzzah!

AND there will be THREE winners, chosen completely randomly from the list of commenters. The big huzzah will be one of my 2011 letterpress printed calendars! Second and third huzzah will be a fabulous shwag bag full of letterpress printed goodness.

So let's get started! Comments will be open until midnight, PST, Monday, December 27. Later that day I'll draw names using a super double-blind name-drawing dealie and I'll make my announcements.

And finally, thank you so, so much!!

P.S. Remember to check out the eclipse tonight if you can!

I came to this blog to support you. But I am delighted to fond that I love reading your posts, especially about your creative process. It is inspiring to read and fun too! I have your posts RSSed (not sure that is a verb) and love when they pop up.

PS
I would have posted without prizes, but I wouldn't say no ;D

Hi Clare, what a lovely Giveaway :)

I love reading about your creative process, I am in awe of your medium. :)

I think 2011 will be hosting quite a few changes in my life which I guess are plans rather than resolutions but it will need resolve to follow thru on some (He! He!:)

If it is OK, I will share your lovely giveaway on my blog tomorrow :)

Have fun looking at the Moon :) T.

Hi Clare,

I check in about once a week to keep track of studio cat and her influence on the creative process.

My resolution is to get into macro photography, so if you need a super close-up image, let me know. Your own photos of your work are coming out really well by the way!

Hi Clare,
First time visitor here (found you via Poppy Place) and just have to say that I'll be a frequent reader. I'm a stationery nut and print fanatic and love your work. Great giveaway too.
I never make resolutions merely for the fact that I'd usually disappoint myself at the end of the year. I'm just that kind of person but I envy those who make them and stick to them.
Looking forward to reading more from your blog

Steve! Thanks for your support of the Studio Cat. She appreciates it, and may require a macro shot of her whiskers and/or extended claws sometime next year.

Thank you for visiting French Revelation! I typically disappoint myself with resolutions, too. But I also find that I'm usually quietly accomplishing something else along the way.

Hello! I found your blog by following you on Twitter, this is my first visit - but I promise I'll be back.

I work in the paper world and blog about my favorite stationery finds on a semi-regular basis.

Hi Carina! Thank you for coming by and commenting!

I stumbled upon your blog because you commented on my etsy seller feature at Studio MME...and I was pleasantly taken by your bindery and letterpress work! Your photographs and other images are also lovely to look at and made your blog a perfect escape from the holiday craziness to read.

oh! and new year's resolutions: make more art (although I challenged myself to make 50 pieces in November, this past month I've made NOTHING, and it's sad)...and to spend more quality time with my husband.

oh, am i too late? i fear i am, but i will throw myself belatedly into the fray regardless...

i think i first found your blog when you posted something about our collaboration on it! (so happy to be collaborating with you.) i liked your photos & words, so i added yr blog to my google reader, and now i look at the posts as they come up, though i am a poor commenter. (i will blame crappy peruvian internet connections.)

& now i will ponder my new year's resolutions...

acetylene said...

ok, my new year's resolutions for 2011 (in triplet form, sort of):

1. trust my instincts
2. trust my instincts
3. trust

4. be kind to myself
5. be kind to myself
6. be kind

7. make what i want to make
8. make what i want to make
9. make

10. do more yoga

:)

thanks for getting me to think about those

Allison sent me. "Amazing handmade stuff" is what she wrote. Letterpress was in the post.

I have a weakness for type pressing into fine paper. I love art and writing. So I came. I like what I see, so I will probably be back.

New Year's resolution: To do enough spiritual practice in my daily life, that my daily life becomes a spiritual practice.

I've read your blog periodically, but today I made the resolution to be better with my blog and follow yours at the same time. It does take a while for everything to jell into place, and I'm happy that's happening for you! you can do it Lady of the Letterpress!

and my main resolution for 2011 is to want what I have.

Hi Clare,

I found your blog through the promotions forum on Etsy, and I'm a first time visitor. Every time I post a new something in my blog, I love to find at least one blog to follow, and I try to comment a lot, knowing how much it motivates me to write more when others comment on my blog. Now, that I'm your follower, chances are I'll read each of your posts. :) Anything that mentions reading and paper requires me to return.

As for your second question, my three biggest resolutions are:
1. write everyday (and that no longer includes blog posts because I really have to get going on my fiction writing).
2. do yoga (even when there's lots of other stuff to be done).
3. stop biting nails (which is a yearly commitment).

I couldn't check out the eclipse. It was cloudy in Chicago. :(

Hello! First time visitor, found you on the etsy forums. Stayed around to read and laugh, will be back to read and enjoy, definitely. Think your work is great, like to read about the process, since I have no patience for this but appreciate it in others.

Can't, won't, shouldn't talk about New Year's Resolutions, kind of like a jinx when you reveal the wish after blowing about the birthday candles. Lose weight-gained. Read more- couch potato. Be kinder- okay, that I did accomplish. Three years ago I was going to open shop on etsy, haven't done it, yet. Maybe in 2011.

Sorry for the long comment. Enjoyed reading all the others comments, especially their resolutions.

Happy 2011 everyone!

Lauren, I am very, very impressed with your 50 pieces challenge. I inevitably fail, or rather, fail even to start, when I give myself those types of challenges, so I am truly in awe!

Allison, three is one of my favorite numbers! I think you will succeed!

NoviceBike - Thanks so much for commenting. You've got a great blog, too!

Pixiemayhem, you are a big inspiration to me, and I love your resolution!

Maggie, I hear you about 'when there's lots of other stuff to be done.' It's easy to put off what would be really good for us in order to 'get other things done.'

New End Studio - best of luck with your resolutions, spoken or unspoken :)

i think i'm too late, but...

1) allison posted a link to this from Facebook, but i didn't see it until now. i only occasionally visit. i would love to join an email list that you'd send us once a month or so, with news and relevant links to your site. i don't use newsreaders that automatically pick up new blog posts...

2) i don't have resolutions for this year, but i have a couple goals: spend quality time with my newborn son, attend to my health, & do something really meaningful with my show at Cooley in the fall.

happy gnu ear!

Hi Anon,

I would love to start a more consistent newsletter/email update system. Until I set up a way to directly link to a sign-up thingy, you are more than welcome to click the email link on the sidebar to add your name to my list for periodic updates.

Thanks for your comment, too. I have a feeling you've got those goals in the bag!
